To add a link to an Instagram story, create or upload the story, tap the sticker icon at the top of the screen, choose Link, paste the web address and tap See preview to check the page, then place the sticker and share. Anyone who can see the story can tap the sticker to open the link. The sticker works on organic stories only: story ads use Meta's call-to-action sticker instead, and a partnership ad can't be built from a story that carries an organic link sticker.
Links in your profile are covered in our Instagram bio ideas guide, and measuring the clicks your stories send is the job of our guide to tracking Instagram link traffic. If a link points to adult content, read our Instagram policy map for adult creators before you post it.
Who can use the link sticker
Instagram opened story links to every account in its announcement on expanding links in stories to everyone, which says the feature had previously been limited to verified accounts or accounts with a certain number of followers. The same announcement sets the exceptions that still apply: new accounts, and accounts that repeatedly share things like hate speech, misinformation or other content that breaks the Community Guidelines, don't get the Link sticker. Access now turns on account age and history rather than audience size.
Instagram's help page on using stickers adds two practical notes: not every sticker is available to everyone or available in reels, and when a sticker won't appear, the first thing to check is that the app is updated to the latest version.
Adding a link sticker, step by step
- Open the story camera and capture or upload the photo or video you want to share.
- Tap Stickers at the top of the screen and pick Link from the tray.
- Paste the full web address, then tap See preview, which the sticker help page says shows what the link will look like when someone opens it.
- If your version of the app offers a field for custom sticker text, swap the raw address for a few words that say where the link goes.
- Tap Done and drag the sticker into position; Instagram's announcement notes that tapping the sticker shows its colour variations.
- Share the story to the audience you intend, remembering that only people who can see the story can tap its link.
Instagram's help pages don't describe changing a link once the story is live, so do the checking before you share. If the address turns out to be wrong, delete the story and post a corrected version rather than leaving a broken link up until the story expires.
Link rules Instagram enforces
A link sticker carries the same rules as any other link on Instagram. Meta's spam policy bans deceptive or misleading links and spells out the patterns it means:
- Cloaking: showing Meta's review systems a different page from the one people actually reach.
- Bait links: a sticker that promises one kind of content and opens something substantially different.
- Domain-switching redirects: a page that makes visitors solve a captcha or sit through an ad, then drops them on another domain.
- Engagement gates: demanding a like, follow or share before people can reach content you promised them.
- Fake interface tricks: buttons that mimic play, poll or like controls, or pop-ups that trap visitors trying to leave.
- Look-alike domains: addresses that misspell a well-known brand to borrow its trust.
Breaking these rules risks more than one story. Under the announcement's exceptions, accounts that repeatedly share violating content lose the Link sticker, and repeated removals can put the account itself at risk. If the sticker vanished after a removal, our guide to Instagram account restrictions explains how to read Account Status.
Link-sticker QA checklist
Run through this before each story that carries a link. It takes a minute and catches the problems that otherwise surface in your replies.
- Destination test: open the link on mobile data in a logged-out browser and confirm it loads the page you described, on the domain you expected.
- Sticker text: the words on the sticker say plainly where the tap goes, such as the shop, the article or the sign-up page.
- Preview: See preview shows the page you meant, not a login wall or an error.
- Placement: the sticker sits clear of the top strip that holds your name and the bottom strip that holds the reply bar.
- Tracking tag: the address carries a campaign tag so the click shows up in your analytics under a name you will recognise later.
- Words on screen: the story also says in text what the link is, for viewers who can't read the sticker easily.
- Shelf life: if the link stays useful after the story expires, add the story to a highlight so it keeps working from your profile.
Meta publishes no safe zone for organic stories, but its page about the link sticker tells advertisers to keep roughly 14% at the top and 20% at the bottom of story ad creative free of text, logos and key elements so the call-to-action sticker doesn't cover them, which is a sensible margin for organic stickers too. Our Instagram Reels safe zone guide deals with the same problem for video, and our guide to Instagram highlights for creators covers keeping link stories on your profile.
Link sticker missing: troubleshooting table
| What you see | Likely reason | What to try | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| No Link option anywhere in the sticker tray | An out-of-date version of the app | Update Instagram from the App Store or Google Play, then reopen the story camera | Using stickers |
| The Link option is missing on a brand-new account | Instagram withholds the sticker from new accounts | Use the account normally and check back; Instagram doesn't publish when access begins | Links for everyone |
| The sticker disappeared after some of your content was removed | Access withdrawn for repeatedly sharing violating content | Open Account Status, request reviews of removals you dispute and stop the pattern | Links for everyone |
| No link sticker while you are editing a reel | Not every sticker is available for reels | Share the reel to your story and add the link there, or use your bio link | Using stickers |
| You can't add the link sticker to an ad or a partnership ad | Link stickers are only for organic stories | Use the call-to-action sticker that Ads Manager adds to story ads | About the link sticker |
| Viewers tap the sticker and land somewhere unexpected | A typo, an expired page or a redirect in the address | Delete the story, fix the address, check it with See preview and share again | Using stickers |
Links to brand partners and affiliate pages
A sticker that sends viewers to a brand you were paid or gifted by makes the story branded content. Instagram's branded content setup page says all branded content must be disclosed with the paid partnership label, that gifted products and services can count, and that the label has to be added each time you post branded content. Add it to the story before sharing, and say in plain words on screen that the link is a partnership or an affiliate link. Our guide to adding a paid partnership label walks through the setting.
Sticker text works best when it names the destination and the action. A few patterns to adapt:
- “Watch the full video” for a longer cut on your own channel or site.
- “Shop the drop” for your own merchandise page on launch day.
- “Join my newsletter” for a sign-up form, with what subscribers get said on screen.
- “Partner link” or “Affiliate link” at the start of the sticker text whenever the destination is a brand you work with, alongside the paid partnership label.
Link stickers, boosting and partnership ads
Paid stories work differently. Instagram's link sticker page says story ads get a default call-to-action sticker placed automatically at the bottom of the ad, that its position can be adjusted in Ads Manager for ads in the 9:16 ratio, and that Meta is introducing these stickers gradually, so some advertisers won't see them yet.
Partnership ads are stricter still. The same page says you can't create partnership ads from stories with organic link stickers, and that a creator whose branded story is meant to become an ad should leave the link sticker off. The link then comes from the ad side: either the content is boosted in Ads Manager with a link that appears as a call-to-action sticker, or the partnership story ad is built in Ads Manager by an advertiser the creator has given ad creation access. Our guide to influencer whitelisting covers those permissions, and our guide to boosting a post as a creator explains paying to promote your own content.
Sticker or bio link?
Instagram's page on how long stories remain visible says photos and videos shared to your story disappear from Feed, your profile and Direct after 24 hours unless you add them as a highlight. That makes the sticker the right tool for time-bound pushes, such as a launch, a live event or a limited offer, and the bio link the right place for destinations that should always be one tap away. Using both works well: the bio link as the permanent front door, and stickers for whatever is new this week.
Limitations of this guide
Instagram's help pages don't publish a limit on how many link stickers a story can carry, don't describe editing a link after posting and don't document the custom sticker text field, so check what your own version of the app offers. Features roll out gradually and can differ by country and account.
This guide reflects Instagram's help pages and announcements as they read on 1 October 2026. It explains how the sticker and its rules work; it can't tell you how many viewers will tap a link or whether a particular destination will pass review.
