Choose Buffer if you want a free plan, a price that grows one channel at a time, and networks that Later does not list, such as X, Bluesky and Mastodon. Choose Later if your week revolves around Instagram and TikTok, you also post to Snapchat, and you will use its bundled Link in Bio page and the longer analytics history on its upper plans, knowing that its pricing page starts you on a trial rather than a free plan. Both publish through the same platform APIs, so neither can automatically post the features Instagram and TikTok keep for their own apps.
Side-by-side matrix from each vendor's pages
Every cell below comes from Later's or Buffer's own pricing and help pages as they read on 1 October 2026. Prices are the US dollar figures each page shows, before tax.
| Question | Later | Buffer | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | Social sets, each holding one profile per supported network: one set on Starter, two on Growth, six on Scale | Channels, meaning each connected profile, on a per-channel rate that falls as you add more | Later pricing; Buffer price list |
| Free way in | A 14-day trial; the pricing page lists no free plan | A free plan for up to 3 channels | Later pricing; Buffer price list |
| Cheapest paid plan | Starter at $18.75 a month, billed yearly | Essentials at $6 per channel a month, or $5 per channel a month billed yearly | Later pricing; Buffer price list |
| How many posts you can schedule | 30 per profile a month on Starter, 180 on Growth, unlimited on Scale | 10 queued per channel at a time on Free; unlimited on paid plans, subject to a fair use policy | Later pricing; Buffer price list |
| Networks | Instagram, Facebook Pages, TikTok, Threads, YouTube Shorts, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Snapchat | X, Bluesky, Mastodon and Substack as well as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads, Pinterest and Google Business Profile | Later post types; Buffer pricing |
| Where a phone reminder replaces auto-publishing | Instagram and TikTok only; the other networks always auto-publish | Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook Groups | Later publishing help; Buffer reminder help |
| YouTube | Shorts only; long-form uploads are not supported | A YouTube channel can be connected, with a reminder option | Later post types; Buffer reminder help |
| Analytics history | Up to 3 months on Starter, 1 year on Growth, 2 years on Scale | 30 days on Free; unlimited on Essentials and Team | Later pricing; Buffer price list |
| Link-in-bio page | Link in Bio on every plan, with email collection and no Later branding | Start Page on every plan, including Free, where it occupies one of the channel slots | Later pricing; Buffer Start Page |

If neither tool fits, the wider field, including Metricool, Hootsuite and the free schedulers built into each app, is covered in our guide to the best social media scheduler for creators.
How the bill grows as you add accounts
The two tools charge for different things, so the cheaper one depends on how many accounts you run rather than on the headline price. Buffer's price list spells out its own examples: three channels on Essentials cost $18 a month on monthly billing or $15 a month billed yearly, and five channels cost $30 or $25. Each extra profile adds a channel, including a second Instagram account or a Start Page.
Later prices by social set instead. One set holds one profile from each network Later supports, so a creator with a single Instagram, TikTok and YouTube channel fits inside Starter's one set. The catch arrives with a second account on the same network. Later's pricing page says extra social sets are not available on Starter, so a second Instagram profile pushes you to Growth, shown at $37.50 a month billed yearly with two sets, or to buying extra sets at $11.25 a month each on Growth and Scale.
Post allowances also behave differently. Later counts every scheduled post per profile per month, and its plan guide says drafts count toward that number. Buffer's free plan limits how many posts sit in the queue at once rather than per month: once a post publishes, the slot frees up again.
Publishing rules: where each tool hands the post back to you
Later's help centre says reminder publishing is available only for Instagram and TikTok, while Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn, Threads and Snapchat posts always auto-publish. Its TikTok guide adds that auto-published TikToks can carry original audio only, and that scheduled videos must run between 3 seconds and 3 minutes. Instagram Stories auto-publish for business profiles only, according to Later's post-type table.
Buffer's Instagram guide lists the features that flip a post to a reminder: music, Story text, Story links and stickers, product tags, collaboration posts and topics, plus any media outside Instagram's accepted aspect ratios. Personal Instagram accounts can only publish by reminder. Buffer's reminder article also lists the networks where no reminder exists at all, including Facebook Pages, X, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Threads, which means a post to those either goes out automatically or not at all.
One Buffer detail catches people out. A reminder post shows as sent once the notification has gone to your phone, even though nothing is live yet. If the Buffer app is not installed with notifications switched on, the reminder cannot arrive and the post does not publish. Later's equivalent sits in its mobile app, which you also need for reminder posts.
Analytics, link pages and team seats
Analytics is where Later's tiers matter most. Its pricing FAQ says the only analytics difference between plans is how far back you can look, and the matrix above shows the jump from months to years as you move up. Buffer's free plan keeps a short window of insights, and its paid plans lift the limit; branded reports for sharing with a brand partner sit on the Team plan only.
Both tools bundle a link-in-bio page, which can replace a separate subscription. Later's Link in Bio can show linked posts, collect emails and connect Google Analytics on every plan. Buffer's Start Page is available on the free plan but counts as one of its three free channels. If the link page is the main thing you need, compare both with the dedicated tools in our Linktree alternatives guide before deciding.
Seats decide the price for anyone working with an editor or manager. Later's Starter is limited to one user, and approvals start on Growth. Buffer keeps Essentials to one user and puts unlimited team members, access levels and approval workflows on Team, which is priced per channel like everything else at Buffer.
Where the vendors' own pages disagree
Both companies publish documents that contradict each other, and the differences change what you would pay or expect.
- Later's plan availability guide still has a Free column, with 12 posts per profile a month and 1 YouTube Short a month, and its TikTok guide says TikTok scheduling works on all plans including Free. The pricing page shows only Starter, Growth and Scale after a trial.
- Later's pricing cards list extra users at $3.75 a month, while the FAQ on the same pricing page says $5 per additional user. The first figure matches the yearly billing view, so check which billing period your checkout uses.
- Buffer's pricing page opens on yearly billing, so its headline is the lower yearly rate; the monthly rate appears in the machine-readable price list.
- Buffer's Instagram guide gives a Reel length of 3 seconds to 15 minutes in one section and says a Reel shorter than 5 seconds becomes a reminder in another. Keep Reels at 5 seconds or longer if you want them to publish unattended.
When pages disagree, rely on what the checkout and the composer show you on the day, and ask support to confirm anything that affects your bill in writing.
A free-trial test plan for both tools
Run the comparison on your own accounts rather than trusting any review, this one included. Buffer's free plan and Later's trial are enough for this test.
- Write down the trial end date and set a calendar alert two days before it, so the choice is yours and not an automatic renewal.
- Connect the same profiles to both tools, using professional Instagram accounts if you want to test automatic publishing at all.
- Schedule an identical set in each: a single image, a carousel, a Reel with original audio, a Reel built on a trending sound and a Story with a link sticker.
- Record which posts went out on their own and which arrived as reminders, and how long the reminders took you to finish by hand.
- After a few days, open each analytics view and note which metrics appear for each network and how far back they go on the plan you would buy.
- Build the link-in-bio page in each tool, check how its clicks are reported, and decide whether it could replace a separate link tool.
- If anyone else helps with your posts, invite them and try the approval flow, or confirm it is missing on the plan you would buy.
- Export something from each, such as an analytics report, to see how easily your data comes out if you leave.
- Cancel the tool you are not keeping and disconnect its access from each social account's settings.
Limits of this head-to-head
This comparison reflects Later's and Buffer's pages on 1 October 2026 and nothing else. It does not measure reliability, support quality or results, and neither tool can make a post perform better than the same post published natively. Prices exclude tax and are shown in US dollars, plan names and limits change often, and platform API changes can switch a format from automatic to reminder publishing without any change to either tool's pricing page. Confirm every figure on the vendor's site before you pay.
