Telegram channel monetization means earning inside Telegram itself: a share of the ad revenue from sponsored messages in an eligible channel, Telegram Stars from paid photo and video posts, monthly Star subscriptions sold through paid invite links, Star reactions and paid messages. Telegram's Terms of Service for Content Creators govern all of it. Rewards are discretionary, Stars are cashed out through Fragment into Gram cryptocurrency or spent on Telegram ads, and a balance can be withheld for rule breaches or lost for good if you lose access to the owner account.
This guide covers earning on Telegram, not using a channel to send fans elsewhere. For that side of the job, see our Telegram marketing guide for OnlyFans creators. Everything below comes from Telegram's terms, blog and developer documentation, checked on 1 October 2026.
Monetisation options at a glance
Telegram has added these features one at a time since 2024, so the rules are spread across several pages. The table pulls them together, with the page each figure comes from.
| Feature | Who can use it | How the money arrives | Rule to know | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ad revenue sharing | Owners of eligible channels; the 2024 launch post named public channels with at least 1,000 subscribers | A 50% share of the revenue Telegram earns from valid sponsored-message impressions, credited as a Gram balance | The share can change without notice, and the terms call it a voluntary incentive rather than payment for services | Launch post; creator terms 2.1 |
| Paid photos and videos | Owners of eligible channels, posting media that stays hidden until a reader pays Stars | A reward worth the equivalent of 0.013 USD for each Star earned from paid posts | Buyers keep access even if you later delete the post or the channel | Creator terms 2.2 |
| Star subscriptions | Admins of a private channel, through a special invite link | Stars debited from the subscriber every 30 days, the only period the API allows, into the channel balance | Telegram sets the maximum monthly amount in its app configuration | Star subscriptions API |
| Star reactions | Owners of eligible channels who switch on paid reactions | Telegram's announcement says owners receive 100% of the Stars sent | Each post shows a leaderboard of top senders, which senders can opt out of | August 2024 post |
| Paid messages | Users who set a fee on their private chats or on groups they own | The person charging receives 85% of the Stars paid for each message | Contacts can always message free, and the recipient may refund a sender in full | Stars terms 6.5 |
| Suggested posts and gifts | Channel admins accepting paid post suggestions; users receiving gifts | Stars for an accepted suggestion; gifts can be displayed on a profile or converted into Stars | Stars from converted gifts fall under the balance rules in the creator terms | Stars API; Stars terms 4 |
A naming note: the 2024 announcements describe rewards in Toncoin, while the current creator terms, the Telegram Ads site and the Stars API documentation call the same TON-based currency Gram. Older guides that mention Toncoin are describing the same route under the earlier name.
Paid posts and what buyers keep
Paid media was introduced in Telegram's June 2024 update: creators publish photos or videos in a channel, and subscribers can only view them after paying Stars to unlock them. The paid media documentation adds that purchases move Stars into the channel's balance, from which the owner can withdraw or buy ads.
Read section 2.2.1 of the creator terms before you price anything. Telegram says it takes reasonable technical precautions against downloading, screenshotting and redistribution, but cannot eliminate the risk, and that you accept the risk of paid content being saved or shared without permission. Buyers also keep access inside Telegram if you delete the post, delete the whole channel, remove them or they unsubscribe; they simply cannot see your later posts.
In other words, a paid post is closer to a sale than a rental. Only put behind a Star price what you are comfortable becoming permanent for every buyer. If paid material does turn up elsewhere, our leaked content response plan and copyright takedown evidence pack cover the next steps.
Star subscriptions, reactions and live streams
Subscriptions are the recurring option. According to Telegram's August 2024 announcement, creators make special invite links that let people join a channel for a monthly payment in Stars, and Telegram suggests them for extra content, early access media or VIP livestreams. The developer documentation confirms these links sell access to a private channel and debit subscribers automatically each month.
The same announcement gives the menu paths. Paid links live under Channel Settings, Channel Type, Manage Invite Links, Create a New Link, where you switch on Require Monthly Fee. Star reactions live under Channel Settings, Reactions, Enable Paid Reactions. Telegram's FAQ adds that channel owners can run live streams in which viewers comment and donate Stars, which pairs naturally with a subscriber-only channel.
Because one invite link equals one price, plan your offer before you create links. A simple structure is one private channel per subscription level, each with its own paid link, plus your public channel for free posts and announcements. Keep a note of which link belongs to which channel so you never share an old or wrongly priced one.
Withdrawals, balances and waiting periods
Section 4 of the creator terms is where most surprises live. The balance shown in your channel is described as an indicative amount, not money Telegram holds for you, until you withdraw it or use it. Withdrawals are processed by Fragment, which the terms describe as a non-custodial platform run by a separate company, to a wallet you control.
| Balance or action | What Telegram says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Star balance from paid posts, subscriptions and reactions | Becomes available for withdrawal 21 days after it accrues | Creator terms 4.1 |
| Gram balance from ad revenue sharing | Becomes available for withdrawal 2 days after it accrues | Creator terms 4.1 |
| Unused Stars earned from your content | Valid for 3 years from receipt, after which they are forfeited and debited | Creator terms 4.7 |
| Spending Stars on ads for your own channel | Each Star counts as 0.02 USD of advertising credit, subject to change; the API pages describe the same option as a 30% discount | Creator terms 4.3; Stars API |
| Starting a withdrawal | Only the owner can do it, with the account's two-step verification password, once the balance passes a minimum set in Telegram's configuration | Stars API |
| Sending to the wrong wallet or losing the account | Withdrawals cannot be reversed, and balances in a channel you can no longer access are forfeited | Creator terms 4.5 |
The terms also say the US dollar or euro value shown in the app is only an approximation, that the value Telegram assigns to Stars can change, that crypto prices move, and that Fragment may be unable to pay some users or countries. Withdraw regularly rather than letting a large balance sit, and treat the in-app estimate as a guide only.
Tax is yours to handle: the creator terms say Telegram will not calculate or pay it and that payouts are inclusive of tax. In Australia, the ATO lists the Australian dollar value of crypto assets received for goods or services as business income, and its page on crypto assets used in business explains how that value is worked out. Record the date and value of every withdrawal and ask a registered tax agent how your Telegram income should be treated.
The rules that can cost you a balance
Telegram's general Terms of Service are short: no spam or scams, no promotion of crime or violence, no illegal pornographic content on publicly viewable channels and bots, and nothing illegal in most countries, including non-consensual intimate images and sexual extortion. The same terms say users in Australia must be at least 18 to sign up. The creator terms then add a code of conduct that ties directly to your money.
- Telegram may withhold rewards, in part or in full, if it decides you breached its terms at any point up to the day you request a withdrawal.
- It may deduct amounts linked to invalid activity: impressions bought or obtained through false representation, explicit requests for people to interact with ads, fake or automated activity even when a third party runs it, tampering with apps or APIs, and sales made through phishing or refund abuse.
- If invalid activity surfaces after you have withdrawn, Telegram can offset it against future rewards or close the channel and account.
- Community owners must remove forbidden content, including links to it, and the users who posted it, and appoint more admins if they cannot keep up.
- The rewards programme can be unavailable to certain channels, regions or channel topics, and Stars or ads may be invisible to part of your audience, without notice or compensation.
The topic clause matters for creators whose public brand is adult-adjacent. Build a plan that still works if ad revenue sharing never switches on for your channel, and keep subscriber-only material inside the content rules regardless of whether a channel is public or private.
Telegram monetisation setup checklist
- Switch on two-step verification for the account that owns the channel, use only official Telegram apps and keep your devices clean, as section 4.5 of the creator terms expects.
- Decide which channels are public and which are private: ad revenue sharing was launched for public channels, while paid invite links sell access to private ones.
- Open Channel Settings, Statistics, Monetization, the path given in the revenue sharing announcement, to see whether your channel shows monetisation stats.
- Turn on paid reactions under Channel Settings, Reactions, and decide whether the public leaderboard suits your audience.
- Create one paid invite link per private channel and record its price, its channel and the date you made it.
- Price paid photo and video posts only for material you accept buyers will keep permanently.
- Set up a cryptocurrency wallet you control before your first withdrawal and store its recovery details offline; Telegram cannot restore a lost wallet.
- Withdraw on a regular schedule and well before Stars reach the expiry date in the creator terms.
- Log the date, amount and Australian dollar value of each withdrawal for your tax records.
- Appoint enough admins to clear forbidden content and spam quickly, and never buy views, run engagement bots or ask followers to click ads.
Limitations of this guide
Every figure here is Telegram's own, and the creator terms say shares, values, availability and the whole rewards programme can change or end at Telegram's discretion, sometimes without notice. Some limits, such as the minimum withdrawal and the maximum subscription price, are not published as fixed numbers at all; they sit in app configuration, so check what your app shows rather than trusting any figure quoted elsewhere. Crypto values also move, so no conversion in this guide should be read as what a balance will be worth when you withdraw.
This is general information, not financial, tax or legal advice. Rules on receiving crypto, and on the content you may sell, depend on where you and your buyers live; a registered tax agent and, where content is sensitive, a qualified lawyer are the people to confirm your position.
