A teleprompter app scrolls your script on the screen you are filming with, either at a speed you set or by listening to you and following along. If you film on a phone and only need fixed-speed scrolling, the teleprompters built into Edits and the CapCut mobile app cost nothing extra. If you want the script to pause when you pause, look at voice-following tools such as PromptSmart, Teleprompter.com, Speakflow or Elgato's Camera Hub, where voice tracking is limited on free tiers, sits behind a paid plan or needs specific hardware. Choose by the device you record on, the scroll method you need and whether the app records video itself, then set up the camera so viewers cannot see you reading.
Everything below comes from each vendor's own product, help or pricing page, checked on 2 October 2026; we have not tested how well any voice tracking works. Writing the script itself is covered in our YouTube script template, so this guide starts once the words are written.
Three ways a teleprompter can scroll
The scroll method changes how you deliver, so decide this before comparing features.
- Fixed speed. The text moves at a pace you choose. Meta's Edits teleprompter tutorial describes adjusting font size and scrolling speed to match your natural pace. It works well for rehearsed reads and punishes ad-libbing, because the script keeps going.
- Voice-following. The app listens and moves with you. PromptSmart says its VoiceTrack scrolls as you speak, stops when you pause or improvise and resumes when you return to the script, and Elgato says Camera Hub's Voice Sync scrolls only when you speak and adapts if you speed up or slow down.
- Timed. Some apps fit the whole script into a set duration. Teleprompter.com lists timed scrolling alongside fixed-speed and voice-activated modes on its pricing page.

What voice-follow scrolling needs
Voice tracking adds requirements that fixed-speed scrolling does not. Elgato's guide to using Voice Sync lists Camera Hub 2.0 or newer, a microphone, and on Windows an NVIDIA RTX 2060 or better plus a CUDA download of about 2 GB. Its system requirements page also says Camera Hub does not support ARM processors such as the Snapdragon chips in some Surface PCs, which rules out those laptops entirely. The two Elgato articles also disagree on the minimum Camera Hub version for Voice Sync, one saying 1.11 and the other 2.0, so install the current release before testing.
Language support is the other gap. PromptSmart lists English, Spanish, French, Russian and German for VoiceTrack on its homepage. If you record in another language, test voice scrolling during a trial before you pay, and keep a fixed-speed fallback for rooms with background noise, since every voice mode depends on the microphone hearing you clearly.
Mirror rigs, second screens and streaming
A phone app is enough when you film with that phone. Once you move to a camera, you either put a screen beside the lens or use a glass rig that reflects the script in front of it. A reflection reverses the text, so the app must be able to flip it: Teleprompter.com lists horizontal and vertical mirroring on its Pro plan, which is the setting to look for if you buy a glass rig separately.
Elgato takes the other route, selling its own Prompter hardware that runs from a single USB cable to a PC or Mac. Its product page says you can move any app or window onto the Prompter display like an extra monitor, and connect a Twitch channel to show viewer messages on it. For streamers, the same screen can carry both your notes and live chat.
Reading-to-camera setup checklist
How natural you look depends as much on setup as on the app. Work through this list before your first take.
- Put the text as close to the lens as the app allows. PromptSmart suggests placing it next to or beneath the front camera, and Edits and CapCut both let you move the window.
- Narrow the text column and enlarge the font, so your eyes travel less from side to side on each line.
- Move the camera back a little and zoom or crop in the edit if your eye movement shows at close range.
- Format the script for speaking: short lines, one idea per line, and breaks marked where you will breathe.
- Write numbers, product names and discount codes the way you will say them, so neither you nor the voice tracker trips on them.
- Read the script aloud once off camera and adjust the scroll speed, or check that voice tracking keeps up.
- Set up hands-free control, such as a Bluetooth remote or foot pedal on apps that support one, so you are not reaching for the screen mid-take.
- Light your face from in front and angle the screen to cut reflections in glasses.
- Record a short test and watch only your eyes. If you can see them tracking lines, repeat steps 1 to 3.
- For sponsored reads, keep the disclosure line in the script exactly as the brief requires, using our guide to FTC influencer disclosure rules.
- Save the final script with the video file; it doubles as a reference when you check captions.
That last step connects to captioning: a script lets you correct automatic captions quickly, which our caption app comparison covers in its QA checklist. For microphones, lights and mounts, see our streaming equipment guide for beginners.
Scripts, privacy and sponsored content
A sponsored script may be confidential until launch, so check where an app keeps it. Teleprompter.com lists cloud script storage on its free tier. Speakflow's free plan includes seven-day script history, with unlimited history and multi-device sync on Plus. PromptSmart says its speech recognition runs on your computer or phone without needing the internet, and describes its web portal as end-to-end encrypted. If a brand contract restricts where unreleased material is stored, compare those statements with the contract before pasting the script in.
Watch for similar names, too. Teleprompter.com's site states it is not affiliated with similarly named products such as Teleprompter Premium or Teleprompter Pro, and app stores carry many apps with “teleprompter” in the title. Check the developer name on the listing before you subscribe, and cancel trials you do not want before they renew.
Matching the app to how you film
| How you film | Route to try first | What to confirm in the trial |
|---|---|---|
| Phone selfie videos with a rehearsed script | The fixed-speed teleprompter in Edits or CapCut mobile | Window position near the lens and a speed you can hold |
| Phone videos where you ad-lib between lines | A voice-following mobile app such as PromptSmart or Teleprompter.com | Tracking in your language and with your usual room noise |
| Webcam or desktop recording and live calls | Speakflow in the browser or desktop app | Whether overlay mode suits the recording software you use |
| A camera with a prompter rig in a fixed studio | Elgato Camera Hub with Prompter hardware | GPU or Apple chip support for Voice Sync on your computer |
| Recording, editing and posting in one app | BIGVU | Which features need a paid tier and whether free exports carry a watermark |
If you record on a computer and then edit long-form, our desktop video editor comparison covers the next step.
Limitations of this teleprompter comparison
Prices, tiers and features were read from vendor pages on 2 October 2026 and can change, and they appear in the currencies those pages showed us. In-app purchases can be priced differently from web plans, and features sometimes differ between an iPhone app and its Android version, so confirm the exact plan on the device you will use.
We have not measured voice-tracking accuracy or reliability for any app, so nothing here ranks them. The only way to know whether an app follows your delivery is to read your own script with it, in your own room, during a free tier or trial.
