A YouTube channel is demonetized at the channel level when YouTube suspends it from the Partner Program or disables its monetization, and YouTube's monetization disabled page lists the usual causes: trying to monetize videos you do not own, a catalog mostly unsuitable for advertisers, not accepting updated program terms, a non-monetizing agreement, and breaches of the channel monetization, spam, AdSense or Terms of Service rules. Inactivity and invalid traffic are two more routes, described on the eligibility page and the invalid traffic page.
Channel-level loss is not the same as two problems that look like it. A yellow icon on one video is an ad-suitability rating for that video alone, covered in our guide to the yellow dollar sign and limited ads. Paused monetization means no approved AdSense for YouTube account is linked, and the paused monetization page says the channel stays in the program while you fix it. Problems at the application stage follow a separate process, set out in our page on what to do when YouTube monetization is rejected.
Identify which kind of loss you have
Start in YouTube Studio, where the monetization disabled page says the Earn section shows your channel's status. Match what you see to a row before you act, because each status has a different fix and a different clock.
| What you see | What it means | Still in the program? | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monetization paused | No active, approved AdSense for YouTube account is linked to the channel; nothing is earned for the paused period, and after 120 days paused the channel loses memberships and its members | Yes | Paused monetization |
| Notice that the channel is scheduled for suspension | Part of the channel may not meet the monetization policies, and you have 7 days to appeal before the suspension date | Yes, until that date | Appeal page |
| Suspended from the Partner Program | The channel loses all monetization tools, features and modules, including ads, Premium revenue and memberships | No | Monetization disabled |
| Monetization permanently disabled | Severe violations of the monetization policies, which can apply to any of your accounts | No | Monetization disabled |
| AdSense for YouTube account disabled for invalid traffic | The payment account is closed because of traffic that did not come from real, interested viewers | The account stops earning, apart from any final payment, and significant cases can also lead to demonetization | Invalid traffic disablement; Invalid traffic page |
| A feature stops earning after a terms deadline | An updated module was not accepted; the feature earns again once you accept it | Yes | Changes page |
| Channel terminated | The channel is removed from YouTube, and partners are no longer entitled to earn any revenue | No | Terminations page |
| Limited or no ad earnings on one video | An ad-suitability rating on that video, not an action against the channel | Yes | Limited or no ad earnings |
Cause-to-response table
Each cause carries its own response and its own deadline. The window column comes from the source on the same row; where a page states no window, the table says so.
| Cause | What YouTube can do | Your response | Window | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Breaking the channel monetization policies, such as the reused content rule | Suspend the channel from the program, or disable monetization permanently in severe cases | Appeal by video or through Creator Support if the decision is wrong; otherwise fix the channel and reapply | Appeal within 7 days of a scheduled-suspension notice or 21 days after suspension; reapply 90 days after suspension | Appeal page |
| Community Guidelines strikes, copyright strikes and visuals matching third-party content | Count toward a suspension on all your related accounts | Appeal the strike or resolve the copyright strike; deleting the video fixes neither | If they cannot be fixed, YouTube may reinstate after 3 months with no new issues | Monetization disabled |
| Monetizing videos you do not own | Suspend payments or disable monetization | Confirm your rights to every monetized upload and stop monetizing anything you cannot clear | None stated | Monetization disabled |
| A catalog mostly unsuitable for any advertiser, or repeated serious violations | Disable ads across the entire channel | Review uploads against the advertiser-friendly content guidelines and turn ads off on the ones that do not fit | None stated | Advertiser-friendly guidelines |
| Inactivity | Turn off monetization on channels with no upload or Posts tab post for 6 months or more | Keep a posting floor you can sustain | From 1 February 2027, new activity tests apply, with a 90-day window to recover | Eligibility page; Changes page |
| Invalid traffic, such as traffic-boosting services or asking viewers to watch or click ads | Limit ad serving, adjust earnings, suspend or disable the AdSense for YouTube account and, in significant cases, demonetize | Stop the source and, if the account was disabled in error, file the invalid activity appeal | Payments can be delayed up to 90 days during an investigation | Invalid traffic page |
| Creator integrity breaches: artificial engagement or financially abusive use of monetization features | Remove the channel from the program or terminate channels | End any paid views, subscribers or watch time, including services a promoter runs for you | None stated | Monetization policies |
| Creator responsibility breaches: egregious behavior on or off YouTube | Turn monetization off temporarily or terminate accounts, including new channels and ones you appear on regularly | Do not use another channel to get around the restriction | None stated | Monetization policies |
| Updated terms not accepted | Stop paying out from the features those terms cover | Accept the modules in YouTube Studio; access returns when you do | 31 January 2027 for the current update | Changes page |
| Identity or PIN not verified in AdSense for YouTube | Hold monetization until you verify | Sign in to AdSense for YouTube and complete identity or PIN verification | None stated | Monetization disabled |
The activity rule is the one most likely to catch a channel that has done nothing wrong. Our explainer on the YouTube monetization changes for existing partners sets out the new tests and why uploads alone are not listed as a way back once a channel slips.
Strikes and demonetization: reading the two pages together
Two YouTube pages can read as if they disagree. The eligibility page says current partners are not removed when they receive a Community Guidelines strike, while the monetization disabled page says strikes, copyright strikes and matching third-party visuals may contribute to a suspension. Taken together, a strike does not remove a partner by itself, but strikes can form part of the case for a suspension.
Strikes also escalate on their own track. The strike basics page says a first strike blocks uploads and several other actions for 1 week, a second strike within 90 days brings a 2-week block, and 3 strikes in the same 90-day period may lead to the channel being permanently removed. Each strike expires 90 days after it was issued, and deleting the content does not remove it. Termination ends program earnings outright, so a strike problem can become a monetization problem even without a suspension.
What happens to your earnings
- New earnings stop. A suspended channel no longer earns from advertising, Premium subscriptions or products such as channel memberships, the monetization disabled page says.
- Past earnings can move. The monetization policies allow YouTube to withhold, adjust or charge back earnings tied to violations, or offset them against future payments, and say investigations can delay payments by up to 90 days.
- Suspended and terminated partners are no longer entitled to any revenue, and YouTube may withhold earnings and refund advertisers or viewers where appropriate, the policies page says; the terminations page repeats this for unpaid earnings when a channel is removed.
- After an AdSense for YouTube account is disabled for invalid traffic, the disablement page describes a 30-day payment hold while YouTube works out any final payment for revenue not identified as invalid. Tax forms may still arrive for past payments or a remaining balance.
- Editing, deleting or unlisting videos will not bring back earnings removed for invalid traffic, the invalid traffic page says, because advertisers were not charged for those views.
- Your records remain reachable. After a monetization agreement ends, the policies page says you can ask Creator Support for your Analytics data from your time in the program, and a terminated channel can still download its Google data even though its YouTube content can no longer be downloaded.
Appeal windows at a glance
| Situation | Appeal window | If the appeal succeeds | If it fails | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduled for suspension | 7 days before the suspension date; the suspension is paused and a decision follows within 14 days | The channel stays in the program | Suspension, no second appeal, and a reapplication 90 days after the suspension | Appeal page |
| Already suspended, with no earlier appeal | 21 days after the suspension, with a decision within 14 days | Readmission within 30 days | A reapplication 90 days after the suspension date | Appeal page |
| AdSense for YouTube disabled for invalid traffic | Invalid activity appeal form, with no window stated; further appeals may not be considered | Ads can take up to 48 hours to resume, and the channel may need to be linked again | No further AdSense participation, and no new accounts | Disablement page |
| Channel terminated under the Community Guidelines | Up to 1 year from termination, with two appeals allowed in that year | You are directed back to the Studio dashboard | You are signed out once you accept the decision | Terminations page |
Suspension appeals are judged on the channel as it stands, so the appeal page warns against deleting videos before you submit. For the format a video appeal must follow, use the checklist in our guide to appealing or reapplying after a rejection; the same rules cover suspensions.
Channel monetization health checklist
A monthly pass through these checks catches most of the causes above before they turn into a notice. It is a routine built from the pages cited here, not a YouTube requirement.
- Open Earn in YouTube Studio and confirm the channel's status and that every feature you use is switched on.
- Check for warnings and strikes, and write down when each strike expires.
- Confirm that every module you rely on is accepted; the current update on the changes page must be accepted by 31 January 2027.
- Check activity against the rule in force. Today, under the eligibility page, that means an upload or post within 6 months; from 1 February 2027 the changes page requires one of 1,000 qualified watch hours in the past 365 days, 1 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days, or 2 long-form videos or 5 Shorts uploaded every 90 days.
- Open AdSense for YouTube and confirm one approved account is linked, with identity and PIN verified. The AdSense set-up page allows one account per payee name.
- Scan traffic sources for spikes you cannot explain, and look for invalid traffic debits, which the invalid traffic page says appear as a separate line item on the Payments page.
- Review anyone you pay to promote the channel. The fake engagement policy says methods that break its rules can lead to content removal or a channel takedown whether the action was yours or a promoter's you hired.
- Spot-check the videos reviewers tend to sample: the main theme, most viewed, newest, biggest share of watch time, metadata and the About section.
- Count the videos carrying limited or no ad earnings. If most of the catalog is unsuitable for any advertiser, the guidelines allow ads to be disabled across the channel.
- Keep a log of every policy email and the dates Studio shows, because appeal windows run from those dates.
One reassurance from the invalid traffic page: embedding your videos, using the Promotions tab in Studio and running mid-roll ads do not raise your invalid traffic risk, so there is no need to stop them.
Mistakes that make a demonetization worse
- Moving to a new or existing channel to keep earning. The monetization policies say doing so during a suspension could lead to the termination of all your channels.
- Deleting videos before a suspension appeal, which removes the evidence reviewers would have judged.
- Deleting videos to clear strikes. Neither strikes nor copyright problems go away when the video does.
- Letting a scheduled-suspension notice run out. Once the 7 days pass the suspension takes effect, although a 21-day appeal remains open.
- Filing invalid-traffic appeals again and again. YouTube gives a final decision and may not consider further appeals, so make the first one complete.
- Reapplying 90 days later with the same catalog, which invites the same answer.
If the channel is reinstated, our map of YouTube revenue streams by tier shows which module controls each stream, so you can switch them back on in a sensible order.
Limitations of this guide
This guide reflects YouTube's help pages as they read on 1 October 2026. YouTube does not publish how it weighs each factor in a suspension, several pages describe the same process in different words, and the activity rules change on 1 February 2027. The email you receive and the dates in Studio are the authority for your channel.
It cannot predict whether an appeal will succeed, and it is not legal or tax advice. If a suspension involves a copyright dispute, the terminations page notes that filing a counter notification begins a legal process, so speak to a qualified lawyer first. If withheld or adjusted earnings affect your tax position, ask a registered tax agent or accountant where you live.
