Snapchat Insights is the analytics tab inside your Public Profile, and Snap's Insights glossary divides it into Public Story metrics, an Engaged Story Audience breakdown, Spotlight metrics and Lens metrics. Read the view-time figures first. Snap's Monetization Program page says ads are served mainly on how long people watch, and creators in that programme now see a Daily Rewards Eligibility panel at the top of the tab built around Spotlight view time.
This guide is a glossary and a reading routine. Growing the follower count these numbers describe is covered in our Snapchat public profile guide, and the criteria for being invited to earn are in how to make money on Snapchat.
Where Insights lives and which date ranges it uses
Open your Public Profile and tap Insights. Snap's Viewing and Understanding Analytics article says the tab shows Top Content and Recents, that tapping any stat opens a graph over 7 or 28 days, and that past public Snaps are grouped into Stories by 24-hour window. A 28-Day Summary sits beneath the recent Stories and Spotlights. The same article says Spotlight's Average View Time and Average View Rate can be viewed over 7, 28 or 90 days.
Snap also warns that views are shown in a few different ways, which can make counts look inconsistent at first glance. A Story tile in Recents shows viewers, while the Story detail shows views per Snap, so the two numbers are not meant to match. On a computer, Snap's view-time tracking article says Insights, including the Daily Rewards Eligibility panel, is also available in Profile Manager, which is the easier place to copy numbers into a spreadsheet.
Public Story metrics, defined
The middle column paraphrases the glossary. The right-hand column is our reading of how to use each figure, not Snap's guidance.
| Metric | What Snap counts | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Snap Views | Views added up across every individual Snap in the Story | Grows with Story length as well as audience, so check it against Viewers before reading anything into it |
| Story Viewers | The number of unique people who watched the Story | Your true reach for that Story and the fairest day-to-day comparison |
| Story Average View Time | The average time people spent watching the Story | The clearest single sign of whether a Story held attention |
| Story Total View Time | View time summed across all Snaps in your Stories | Rises only when reach and attention grow together; Snap's programme criteria are counted in hours of this kind |
| Story Screenshots | Times a viewer screenshotted one of your Snaps | A keep-this signal, strongest on lists, tips and anything people want to refer back to |
| Story Clicks | Clicks or swipe-ups from a Snap to a destination, such as a web link or a Public Profile | Only meaningful on Snaps that carry an attachment or point somewhere |
| Replies | Story Replies sent as text or Bitmoji reactions, which you can read when reviewing a Public Story | Conversation; the nearest thing Stories have to a comment count |
| Creator Rewards on a Snap | Creator Rewards earned through Gifts on that Snap | Only relevant where Gifts reach you; how rewards become cash is in our Creator Rewards payouts guide |
Recents adds per-Snap detail. Tap a Story tile and the analytics article says you get views, viewers, screenshots, swipe-ups, interactions and Story Replies for each Snap. Interactions is not defined in the glossary, so treat it as a general engagement count rather than a precise measure.
Spotlight metrics, defined
Tap See More on any Spotlight to filter and compare posts by these metrics, listed in Snap's Content Insights article and defined in the glossary.
| Metric | What Snap counts | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Spotlight Views | Times viewers started watching the Spotlight | A start, not a finish; plenty of views with little view time means people swiped on |
| Spotlight Viewers | Unique viewers of that post | Set against Views, it shows whether people rewatch |
| Followers | New followers gained from that Spotlight | The best guide to which formats turn strangers into an audience |
| Favorites | Times viewers favourited it, shown only when Show Favorite Counts is on in Public Profile settings | A blank here may mean the setting is off, not that nobody favourited |
| Reposts | Times viewers reposted it | Distribution your viewers did for you |
| Comments | Comments posted on the Spotlight | Also a moderation job, since the thread sits under your post |
| Shares | Times viewers shared it | A strong sign the post works beyond your existing followers |
| Spotlight Clicks | Taps through to a destination such as a web link or your Public Profile | Profile taps are where casual viewing turns into browsing |
| Spotlight Screenshots | Times a viewer screenshotted it | Rarer on video; a spike suggests the post has reference value |
| Spotlight Average View Time | Average time viewers spent watching, over a choice of date ranges | Only meaningful next to the video's own length |
| Spotlight Total View Time | All the time viewers spent watching | The raw material of the Daily Rewards Eligibility figure |
| Average View Rate | The average share of the video that viewers completed, over a choice of date ranges | The fairest way to compare videos of different lengths |
Snap adds a privacy note in the same article: viewer, repost, comment and share counts may be publicly visible in Spotlight playback or on your Public Profile. Assume those four rows can be seen by brands and rival creators as easily as by you.
Audience and Lens metrics
The Engaged Story Audience section describes people who watched your Public Stories over the past 28 days: an age distribution, top locations, and top interests compared with the Snapchat average across interest categories, according to the glossary. The separate Audience section shows your follower count, with gender and age breakdowns once you have more than 200 followers, per Snap's Audience Insights article.
Lens metrics cover Lenses on your profile. Reach is the number of users who played with your Lenses; Views adds up Lens views from direct Snaps, Story posts and plays; Shares counts how often a Lens was shared; Plays counts activations in the Snapchat camera; and Snap Camera Play Time is total use by Snap Camera users. If you build Lenses for payouts, the reward figures live in My Lenses rather than here, as our guide to Snapchat Lens Creator Rewards explains.
The Daily Rewards Eligibility panel
Creators in the Monetization Program see a Daily Rewards Eligibility section at the top of Insights showing Total Spotlight View Time for the last 28 days, according to Snap's tracking article. The article calls it the key metric to track, and Snap's programme page says that from 7 May 2026 you must keep at least 100 hours of it to qualify for maximum Creator Rewards.
Read it as a rolling window. The oldest day drops out as each new day comes in, so a strong week props the figure up for as long as it stays inside the window, and a quiet spell drags it down slowly before it becomes obvious. Snap does not say what happens below the line beyond the word maximum, so track your margin above it rather than the figure alone. What happens to rewards once they are earned is covered in our payouts guide.
Metrics Snap's creator glossary does not define
Third-party guides often describe tap-forwards, tap-backs, swipe-aways, completion rates, profile views or traffic sources as Snapchat metrics. Snap's current creator glossary defines none of them. Two do appear in Snap's Business Help article on Public Profile metrics, written for business profiles: Profile Views by day, and subscribers gained by source, where the options are Discover, Lens, Profile, Search, Spotlight and Other. That article still says subscribers rather than followers, calls favourites Likes, and marks several metrics as Ads Manager only, so it may not match what a creator account shows. Where the two disagree, the creator glossary describes the creator view.
You can still answer the questions those missing metrics are meant to answer:
- Where people left a Story: open it in Recents and compare viewers on the opening Snap with viewers on later ones; a sharp fall marks the exit point.
- Whether a Spotlight was finished: Average View Rate is Snap's own completion-style measure.
- Which posts brought followers: the Followers figure on each Spotlight shows conversions; growth it does not explain came from Stories, search or promotion off Snapchat.
- Interest in your profile: Spotlight and Story Clicks include taps through to your Public Profile.
Treat any tool that reports a metric Snap does not define as an estimate built on Snap's numbers, not as data from Snap.
What brands can see from your Insights
The glossary now opens with a note on brand tools. For creators eligible for monetisation and brand discovery, brands can see what is already public or mirrors a viewer's view: display name, username, profile link, high-level Story and Spotlight view totals and your public posts, plus your follower count even where you have hidden it in some places. Deeper Creator Insights, such as aggregated age and gender splits, country or interest breakdowns, lifetime totals and returning viewer rates, are optional and reach brands only when you switch on the relevant sharing settings, globally or per brand.
The Brand Partnerships toggle in Public Profile settings is one of those switches: Snap's Brand Partnership article says turning it on opts you in to sharing Public Profile analytics with Snap's third-party partners and to letting brands message you. Sponsored posts have their own sharing option, covered in our guide to the Snapchat Paid Partnership label. Decide what you share before a negotiation starts, not halfway through one.
A weekly Insights review template
This order runs from the account-level number down to single posts, so you finish knowing what to change next week. Copy it into a spreadsheet and fill the last column each week.
| Step | Where in Insights | What to record | Question to answer | This week |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First | Daily Rewards Eligibility, if you see it | The Total Spotlight View Time the panel shows and your margin above Snap's line | Is the margin wider or narrower than last week? | |
| Second | The 28-Day Summary | Snap Views, Viewers, Average View Time and Total View Time, written beside last week's entry | Did attention move with reach, or did one rise while the other fell? | |
| Third | Recents, each Story this week | Viewers on the opening and closing Snap, Replies and Screenshots | Where did people stop watching, and what was on screen at that point? | |
| Fourth | Spotlight, See More | This week's posts ranked by Average View Rate, then by Followers | Which format both held people and converted them? | |
| Fifth | Spotlight public counts | Shares, Reposts and Comments on each post | Which post travelled beyond your own followers? | |
| Monthly | Audience and Engaged Story Audience | Age, gender, top locations and top interests once they appear | Does the audience match who your content and brand deals are for? | |
| If you publish Lenses | Lens metrics | Reach, Plays and Shares for each Lens | Which Lens deserves an update or a mention in your Story? | |
| Last | Your own notes | One change to test next week and the metric that will judge it | What will you do differently, and how will you know it worked? |
Keep the routine plain and consistent. One week rarely means much on its own; a run of weekly entries shows whether a change actually worked.
Limitations of this guide
Definitions here come from Snapchat Support's glossary and Insights articles as checked on 1 October 2026, and Snap changes both the app and its help pages without notice. Not every creator sees every metric: the eligibility panel appears for monetised creators, demographics need a minimum follower count, and favourites depend on a setting. Snap publishes no benchmarks, so nothing here says what a good view time or view rate is for your niche; compare your posts with each other rather than with other accounts. If you post on several platforms, our guides to Instagram Insights and TikTok analytics show how the same weekly habit carries over.
