Who gets age-checked: fans, creators and collaborators
OnlyFans uses one minimum age and three different levels of checking. Its Privacy Policy sorts users into fans, creators and “Content Collaborators”, meaning anyone who appears in a creator's posts. All three must be adults. The difference is the method: creators and collaborators always go through a document-and-selfie check, while for fans the method depends on where they live and on what OnlyFans sees on the account.

Treat the table as the minimum. OnlyFans says the exact steps vary by location, so the flow that appears on your own screen is the one that applies to you.
What OnlyFans' terms say about the 18+ rule
The official age rule is short. OnlyFans' Terms of Use say that to register and open a fan account you must be at least 18 years old, able to be legally bound by a contract with OnlyFans, legally permitted to join and view content where you are, and not convicted of a serious crime. The same section warns that you may be asked for more information before your account is approved. Creators must meet those conditions and complete the extra creator steps on top.
The help centre repeats the rule in its who can use OnlyFans and why am I being asked to prove I am over 18 articles: everyone must be at least 18, must accept the Terms of Service, and must give information to confirm age and identity before opening an account, with the details varying by country of residence.
The Age & Identity Verification page in OnlyFans' Safety & Transparency Center gives two reasons for the age limit: paying for a subscription requires card details and the legal capacity to pay, and some content on the platform is not suitable for anyone under 18.
The contract condition matters more than it looks. Because the terms require that you can be legally bound by a contract, a place where the age of majority is above 18 can raise the practical minimum. If you are unsure, check the law where you live before you sign up.
Do subscribers need ID? How fan age checks work
Not always, and that is the honest answer to the most searched question here. OnlyFans' Privacy Policy says it has processes intended to ensure all fans are at least 18, and that fans in “certain circumstances or locations” must also verify their identity. Where an extra check is required, the policy describes a ladder that starts with the least intrusive method:
- Email address age estimation. A third party estimates whether you are over 18 by checking websites and apps where your email address has been used before.
- Facial age estimation. If the email estimate fails, or is not allowed where you live, you may be asked for a short selfie clip. The policy says this estimates age only and is not used to recognise you.
- Age and identity verification. If an estimate wrongly puts you under the threshold, you may be offered the full check: a government identity document plus a selfie, matched by the provider.
For the estimation steps, the policy says OnlyFans itself receives only the result (pass or fail, and the reason for a fail) and keeps it as a record. The Transparency Center adds that explicit media can only be viewed by users who have finished registration, and that the requirements depend on where the fan lives.
What OnlyFans does not publish is a list of which countries or US states trigger which step. Search results that claim a fixed list are guessing. If you are a fan, the prompts shown during sign-up are the authoritative answer for your location.
Where the law requires age checks
Two sets of laws explain most of the recent changes. They apply to platforms, not to individual fans, but they shape what you are asked for.

Under the UK Act, pornography is “primary priority content”, the category children must be prevented from encountering, according to the government's explainer. Ofcom is the regulator and published its guidance on age assurance in January 2025, the explainer says. In the US, the Supreme Court held that Texas's law survives First Amendment review because it only incidentally burdens adults, and it described government-issued ID and transactional data as established ways to check age.

Why creators face a stricter check
A fan only needs to show they are an adult. A creator is about to be paid, publish content and appear to the public, so OnlyFans wants to know exactly who they are. The terms require every new creator to upload a valid form of ID and two photos of themselves, add payout details and answer further age or identity questions whenever asked. That is why searchers who ask “does OnlyFans require ID” get two answers: sometimes for fans, always for creators.

OnlyFans' help article on featuring someone else says the creator must show the person is over 18, has consented and has accepted the terms, either by tagging their verified OnlyFans account or by sending them a verification invitation from the release-forms page.
If an age check fails or will not let you in
- A fan estimate says you look under 18. The Privacy Policy says you may then be offered the full ID-and-selfie route. Use it rather than opening a second account.
- You cannot finish the check. OnlyFans' customer support article points to its contact form and support@onlyfans.com. Contact them from inside your account rather than through a link someone sends you.
- You are tempted to find a way round it. Don't. The Transparency Center says OnlyFans will take appropriate action against anyone who tries to get around its age policies and controls.
- You are a creator whose application stalled. The common causes, such as poor photos or expired documents, are covered on the verification process page.
